Description
The White Steenbras is a bottom feeder with a reputation for being a timid feeder and a ferocious fighter. They can be found in sandy bays in the gullies adjoining sandbanks, in estuaries and river mouths, where they feed on shrimp, prawn, white mussel, crab or worm. They utilize their powerful gills to force water out and blow their prey from the sand. The bait must be delicately presented. Use prawn, cracker shrimp, white mussel, bloodworm, pensil bait or crab. One can try for this fish any time during the day, however, before sunrise or after sunset are the best times
Typical Bite
This is not an easy bite to detect as the fish can often strip your bait without you knowing, so lift the rod tip if you feel movement. The Steenbras will often swim towards you and you will need to take up the slack. Set the hook well
Pro Tips
- This trace should be secured to your nylon using the ring of the swivel that has the hook secured to it, use the other for your sinker
- Always sharpen your hooks and ensure that the point of the hook is exposed when baited
- Use a short sinker trace, or employ the sliding sinker method
